Manu was sure that there was a sport about to explode, but he had issues with the kite’s lack of basic accessories. That kite had a slow leak in the centre strut. I managed to get the kite to hold air and secured a second 7m kite the next day. The Patagonia Maui Kite and Wing Fest 2022 kicks off today and they are taking it right at the very beginning, around 1997, when a French windsurfing speed sailor called Manu Bertin brought a few samples of an early Wipika inflatable kite to Maui.
